The Treatment of Doing Nothing

So we went from immediate treatment for acute symptoms, to doing nothing unless an ongoing issue became apparent, and only at that point instituting a long-term treatment plan if required. Sometimes after settling the immediate, visible and major symptoms, we need to sit back and see if the situation will evolve and resolve itself rather than trying to exercise a control which we often don't have.

A scheme like this would take the current interest in foreign investment in Penang and leverage it into creating the future that the Chief Minister seemed to be aiming for in his speech, creating opportunities for local ownership. The important thing is to change the way of thinking from traditional approaches that don't work to innovative ways of achieving goals that delight the community.

I would love to set up the modern equivalent of an ancient concept - a space for dialogues that allow us to challenge our own concepts, create and define our real values and philosophies, and better understand the power of diversity. I would love to set up a Google+ circle that allows a number of excellent business thinkers and leaders to ask each other questions and respectfully listen to each other over months and years as we take the voyage of exploration through this complex world

Please let this be toilet humour

If your mind is firmly fixed in the toilet and you are worried about work time spent there, then maybe try more innovative solutions than timing breaks and disciplinary action. Toilets are excellent places to post news and communications. The Body Shop HQ had graffiti walls in the toilets. It's not a bad place for posting notes with suggestions and innovations. At least that way, toilet breaks can be productive for work as well as personally!

Social Media and the tumbling walls

Social media is not traditional media, even if traditional media continues to abandon its own standards and unique selling proposition to become more like social media. If this trend in traditional media continues, there will be more trouble ahead for an industry that has been in decline for many years. Hopefully there are enough smart people out there to realise that social media is substituting for traditional media and that the answer is to re-create the values of your operations in the new environment.
